B12 to ASU Campus Tour Route!

I hope everyone is looking forward to putting in some much needed running mileage this weekend. We've come a long long way to get this far in our training to become complacent of our training schedules. Let's get back to the core of our commitment towards accomplishing our individual yet personal goal. Albeit, a PR time, finishing a marathon for the very first time, improving last year's time, or simply just the love for running. What ever it maybe for you but just keep in mind that YOU MUST KEEP RUNNING!!!

Meeting Place: B12 - Parking Lot
Saturday: 7:30 meeting time
Sunday: 8:00 meeting time (Please let me know)
Distance: 9 to 10 miles

****REWARD: ReaXion Energy Drinks for each person that finish the run*****

**Please review this new running route (link below). I will bring maps on Saturday, but please look over it ahead of time. The route will start at B12 but will take you through Tempe to ASU campus - I did this just to break the scenery a bit. - You will not be disappointed!

No really...fueling up on long runs is a must!

This week I weighed my self and found that for the 2nd week in a row I had lost some weight. Where I know most of us are over joyed to see the pounds come off around the holiday season this weight loss did not make sense to me. I have have not been diligent with my calories the last two weeks at all. So even though I am working out I should not be loosing weight. I started to think about it and came to a scary conclusion...I am loosing muscle on our long runs! My body has actually had to turn to using muscle for fuel because I have not been providing enough fuel for it to use.

I know a couple of month ago I posted a blog about the need for nutrition WHILE we run but I failed to follow through with really encouraging the tribe (including my self) to use it. We all really need to consider using these last few weeks leading up to PF Chang's to get train our selves to digest something while we run. Training while overly fatigued can also contribute to injury. As we get tired our running form breaks down and we start to run slopily which leads us to injury.

Of course I have no doubt that we can all complete this race without gels, goo's, or sports beans but the goal is not simply to cross the finish line. We will be less fatigued and in better condition to meet our goals if our body is properly fueled to do so.

The moral of my rant is that this weekend I have another challenging for the tribe. I challenge every one in the tribe (weather you complete your long run with the group or not) to attempt a new fueling method this week. Amit has come gels is snagged from the 12K and I will stop and pick up some other types of fuel so that we can all partake. Come prepared with a race belt, pockets, or something to stash the goods in!

Volunteer event!!

Hey B12 Tribe!
We have found a fun event for us to share our love of running to help motivate children! There is going to be a Kids rock n roll run on Jan. 16th. It is a 1 mile fun run, and they need volunteers to help keep track of kids, get them to the start line and run with the kids. We will be assigned to a specific school to help the teachers.
I need a head count of everyone interested in helping out. The kids race is in Tempe, I do not yet know what the start time is. My plan is to do the Fun run with the Kids, then jump on the light rail and head to the expo! Should be a fun day!!!
Please email me at threedogs3@gmail.com and let me know if you are willing to help out with the kids. I need a head count by end of week.
Also another HUGE Congrats to Amber for finishing her first 1/2 marathon! She was a ROCK STAR yesterday! we had a great weekend in Tucson. The weather was perfect!
I will post pictures later in the week.
thanks!
Erin

Temporarily Out of Commission

After taking one week off I decided to go running this morning at an easy pace for a 5.5 mile run. I wore a knee brace for compression on my right knee. I stopped for a few minutes to do some stretches but kept running along with several other runners and walkers in the area. At this point (4+ miles), the pain on my right knee also decided to resurface and began to inject series of pulsating and unbearable pain. My strength attempted to battle the pain away by increasing my speed in order to get home sooner and apply ice on my knee, but I end up stopping multiple times. I must sadly admit defeat and with utter disappointment that my knee problem/pain is for REAL and can no longer be ignored nor tolerated. I am "temporarily out of commission" for an unknown length of time until my knee is fully recovered.

THIS is a HUGE disappointment to me, as you can imagine, since all of you have been on the same arduous journey. Truly, each one of you have been a tremendous source of inspiration this entire time. Again, this is only temporary but I must be now realistic of my current condition...as always - GODSPEED!

B12 TRIbe - Sat & Sun Run and Hiking

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” - Gandhi

At last, we are venturing into the critical phase of our training schedule. These next six weeks will be the defining moments of our inner strengths and physical will. Which means that you must be honest to your training commitments in order to prevent getting injured...LIKE ME!!! We will be more flexible with the weekly long running schedule for the next couple of weeks due to the holidays, familial commitments, holiday parties, drinking, eating tons of chocolate fudge, and being absolutely fat and lazy!!!

So, for this weekend – We have a group running on Saturday - Lead by Erin and Amit...and another group on Sunday lead by Martinelli and Lindsay. The meeting place and time will remain the same on both days including the running route.
Also, a small group of us (Jeff and others?) have opted out of the run (due to knee problems) and will be hiking the Camelback Mountain on Saturday morning. The meeting place for this event will be at B12 as well.

Saturday & Sunday’s Schedule

Start time: 7:30'sh
Meeting Place: Building 12 Parking lot Route
Distance: 8 to 10 miles (Thatcher-buddy, you will have to add 5 more miles to the running route since you are doing 15 miles, wow!) Erin Armstrong can help you with that…

B12 TRIbe has come alive!!!

"Don't ask what the world needs, rather ask what makes you come alive, and GO DO IT...because what the world needs is people who have come ALIVE." - Howard Thurman.

We are one week away from our annual Thanksgiving holiday break woo-hooo, which means that the more we run this Saturday the more we get to eat turkey, stuffing, mash potatoes and gravy, and veggies, drink wine, and somebody stop me! geez! Sorry, just got a little carried away...but you know what I mean.

My family normally have the regular thanksgiving food, BUT we also add traditional Filipino food. So, yes, turkey and pancit, stuffing with lumpia and sweet n sour sauce...and of course with white rice. Visiting families and friends have been known to bring empty topper wares to take food home..ha!

I'm totally motivated to run the 9 miler this saturday. The weather is going to be absolutely  perfect, soo be ready-ready-ready to do some long fun and loving - long distance running. Amit, Martinelli, Sarah (yes, we know have three sara(h)'s in our group) and I ran it last week. They completed the entire distance in about 1:30 to 1:40 time. AWESOME JOB!

Old School B12- Sat Nov 14th

Hello B12'ers!

On Wednesday I did a solo lunch run following the same Washington to Scottsdale route most of you did on Tuesday. It was later in the day after what I thought was a bad phone interview, it was hotter than it looked outside, I had some equipment issues (new arm band for the iPod), and I was just feeling generally frustrated and unmotivated. To top it all off I had just made it to the turnaround point and was now staring at what seemed like the biggest hill ever. Suddenly, like a message from the running gods, the low unmistakable intro beat to Eye of the Tiger starting playing on my iPod. In that moment I dug in, focused, and ran as steady as I could up the hill and for the entire 4:08 minutes that is Eye of the Tiger. When the song ended I thought to myself...I need to fill my iPod with songs that motivate me like that one does!

Do you have a song that keeps you going when you want to quit? If so share with the tribe by making a comment on this post. Let us know what song or songs drive you!

This week we are taking it back to the old school also known as meeting at B12 in Tempe. I have created some variations of one route to accommodate a few different distances depending on each individual's goals. They are very similar to each other so we will never be too far away from our fellow members. I pasted pictures and links of each route below. I will bring printed copies of the routes on Sat so that we can review them as a tribe but if you can I would also suggest looking the maps over before coming out on Sat. If you click on the map it will open up bigger to give you a better view. These routes range from 7-9 miles.

B12 Running TRIbe BEATS the Phoenix 10K!!

Congratulations to all the B12'ers who finished the Phoenix 10K this week end!! It was a beautiful day to run with 7,000 or our closest friends. There was entertainment along the way including local bands, running Elvis, a stripper advertising her pole dancing lessons out of the back of a pick up truck, and a lovely rendition of Humpty Dumpty. You can check out times at www.ceptiming.com and pictures at www.zazoosh.com (although they were not up as of this afternoon).

As usual I walked away from another Saturday feeling more inspired to run faster, harder, and longer! You guys are a constant inspiration and motivation.

So who thinks we should take things back to the old school and do a Tempe B12 run this weekend? I can map out a pretty good 8-9 miler.

Fuel for a Runner's Diet at Runner's World.com

Hello B12RT! The group is starting to get into longer runs on the weekends and as a result I started thinking about when it becomes necessary to fuel up during a run. This article is pretty simple and gives some insight into the "general" rule about when to starting adding carbs to the run.

"The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start."

I will bring the B12 mascot this Saturday. She is a 7 year-old Boxer lab and her walks are my runs :)

Hope to see you all there!

Thank you for those brave souls who showed up last Sunday morning at 6:30 to cheer on members of the B12TRIbe competing in Nathan’s Triathlon Race. It was my rookie run, so of course a few things had to go wrong, like forgetting my race belt and taking a long ass time during the transitions. However, I would do it all over again if I could, actually, a few of B12RT members are competing in Tri races in the upcoming months. Keep a look out for these announcements.

B12 Running TRIbe

“Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today”

When: 9/26/09
Where: Building 12

Meeting time: 6:30

Training Goal:  3 to 4 miles run this Saturday. Please see your training schedule for the recommended pace/time and your total mileage distance for the week. If you are a few miles behind, then this is a great time to make up the extra mile or two. Again, these runs are not time so focus on finishing the prescribed distance.

For this Saturday: Sara Murphy and Erin Armstrong are leading the group runs. Please contact them for questions/directions/running routes at:

Sara Murphy: sara.murphy@phoenix.edu
Erin Armstrong: Erin.armstrong@phoenix.edu

Upcoming Events: Sunday, 9/27, Nathan's Triathlon Race.
Come check out and support the B12R-TRIbe members participating in a Triathlon race this Sunday at Tempe Town Lake. The race begins at 6:30 am. There will be a little shindig following the event at my house, contact me for directions, its BYOB, bbq, NFL, and be lazy.

PF Changs Marathon - Please sign up if you haven't yet. The goal this year is to get 600+ runners registered for PFC. Fact: UOP was awarded a trophy last for having the most employees participated in the PFC race event.

Phoenix 10K is coming up fast.
Tucson 1/2 Marathon is on the radar. We have several B12RT members looking to participate in this event as well.

**Let me know if you would like administrative access to this blogger site so you can also post updates and your own stuff **

Godspeed.

B12RTribe

For this Saturday - Sept. 19

Due to the closure of B12 parking lot, we will be meeting at Tempe Center of the Arts parking lot. It is located on 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway.

Meeting time: 6:30

Goal: Our goal for this Saturday will be covering ‘distance’. The recommended length is to fully complete 4 to 6 miles by jogging, brisk walking, running, or tempo run. Time will not be a factor as this training is to condition our mind and body to successfully complete 6 miles without stopping (unless you have pee).
